Jackson Hole Tourist Attractions and Sightseeing

Picture of gondola rideAlthough there are a huge quantity of tourist attractions and recreational activities awaiting within the Grand Teton National Park, this is by no means all that Jackson Hole has to offer. Summer attractions are plentiful, as are ski resorts in the winter, such as the acclaimed Snow King Resort and the huge Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which is amongst the largest of its kind in the USA.

Tourists should always spend time visiting the National Elk Refuge and its wildlife attractions. Those who are feeling a little more adventurous may well like to consider an afternoon white-water rafting on the Snake River, or hiking through Jackson Hole's spreading Bridger Teton National Forest. If you simply have an hour or so going spare, then head to Teton Village and play a round of Disc Golf at the ten-hole course, using Frisbees instead of actual golf balls.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

One attraction which is simply quite unmissable is the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which lies around 12 miles / 19 km to the northwest of the city center and is known for its endless recreational activities, including paragliding, mountain biking and hiking. The gondola rides from Teton Village are always extremely popular and offers views that really will fill you with wonder and excitement, while in the winter, skiing and sledding becomes the order of the day, along with ice skating.

National Elk Refuge

Founded around 100 years ago as nothing short of a sanctuary for the biggest herd of elk in existence, the National Elk Refuge borders the very outskirts of Jackson city, the Bridger Teton National Forest, and also the Grand Teton National Forest. Each winter, almost 8,000 elk gather here, migrating from as far away as the Yellowstone National Park. Each year, literally thousands of elk antlers are shed and collection by the Boy Scouts of America, being sold to fund both feed and research. The National Elk Refuge offers a variety of seasonal attractions, including horse-drawn sleighs in the winter, and covers an overall area of around 25,000 acres / 10,115 hectares.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding provides a very pleasant way to explore many parts of the Jackson Hole area, with the 'A OK Corral' at the Horse Creek Ranch being highly recommended and situated just 10 miles / 15 km to the south of the city itself. Advertised as providing the ultimate is 'wilderness adventures', the various horse riding packages take full advantage of the natural scenery and the nearby Gros Ventre Wilderness. Fishing excursions and big-game hunting is also available here, along with hearty Cowboy-style dining and some superb views across the Lewis and Clark's trail.

The Hoback River Canyon and Basin can be found around 15 miles / 24 km to the south of the city of Jackson, lying off the Highway US-189. Many recreational attractions await tourists and day trippers, ranging from rock climbing and hiking, to white-water rafting and even winter sports, such as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The Hoback River Canyon enjoys an especially scenic setting, with particular highlights including the Battle Mountain, the Granite Falls and the neighboring Granite Hot Springs.

Something for thrill seekers looking for a different way to get the adrenaline flowing, white-water offers a very enjoyable way to spend a sunny afternoon and is only available during the summer months. Taking full advantage of the natural rapids within the Snake River, white-water rafters will find themselves passing a number of different Jackson Hole attractions along the 8-mile / 13 km route, including the Hoback River Canyon, whilst enjoy the extreme natural scenery, the splashing and the camaraderie. Both small and large boats are on hand, with each offering a very different experience and seating between eight and 12 passengers. Worth noting, early white-water rafts will enjoy a complimentary breakfast, while riders on the last boat will be treated to a free dinner.

Bridger Teton National Forest view

The Bridger Teton National Forest is a phenomenally large expanse of public land and encompasses more than 3 million acres / 1.2 million hectares, dominating much of the Jackson Hole region and being filled with quality natural attractions and breathtaking areas of wilderness. In total, there are more than 30,000 miles / 4,830 km of roads within the Bridger Teton National Forest, many meandering rivers and streams and around 40 different camping sites. In the winter months, the Alpine skiing and even dog sledding becomes a major draw card. Keep an ey out for the native beavers, bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes, elk and moose, which are often easy to spot and observe from a distance.
